Summary

Parts of a possible curvilinear ditched enclosure of Middle/Late Bronze Age date were revealed during the archaeological evaluation undertaken in 2001 by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development of a field to the north of Bridport Road and east of the Western Link road. There was a suggestion of a possible entrance in the southern part and a concentration of worked flint and Middle/Late Bronze Age pottery was found in the southwest corner. The full circuit of this possible enclosure was not traced.

Full Description

Parts of a possible irregular curvilinear enclosure were revealed during the archaeological evaluation undertaken in 2001 by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development of a field to the south of Bridport Road and north and east of the By-pass. Evidence for this was found in Trenches 48, 63, 64 and 65 in the northern part of the site. A steep-sided flat-based curvilinear ditch 2.15m wide and 1.02m deep containing Middle/Late Bronze Age pottery in its secondary fill was found in Trench 48. A further three trenches (63, 64, 65) were excavated to try to trace the line of this ditch. A possible continuation of the ditch was found in trenches 63 and 64, but this ditch was slighter in form being only 0.7m wide and 0.7m deep. These ditches may form an irregular enclosure about 28m long by 18m wide. No trace of a ditch was found in Trench 65, perhaps indicating an entrance to the south. Within the southwestern corner of this possible enclosure was a layer containing a large quantity of worked flint and a number of sherds of Middle/Late Bronze Age pottery, perhaps the remains of a localised dump of material. A watching brief was carried out in the area immediately south of this possible enclosure in March 2005. No archaeological features were observed, but the area had been disturbed by modern disturbance (3)
