Please read our .

Summary

A cluster of thirteen pits and postholes forming a probable structure was investigated by excavation in 2005 by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development as part of Phase II of the Poundbury development (1). The structure comprised a cluster of thirteen pits and postholes in an area of about 10m diameter. The pits were concentrated in the northern part and the postholes in the southern part. The form and function of this structure has not been determined. Four of the pits were excavated and all contained Middle Bronze Age pottery, including a large number of sherds from a single imported Trevisker style vessel in one pit. Significant quantities of charcoal and charred grain were also recovered. This structure lay in the northwest corner of the Middle Bronze Age enclosure [F204] and appears to be contemporary with it.

Full Description

A cluster of thirteen pits and postholes forming a probable structure was investigated by excavation in 2005 by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development as part of Phase II of the Poundbury development (1).One of the pits was excavated in Trench 7 during the evaluation of this site by Wessex Archaeology in 2001 (2). The numbers in square brackets are context numbers used in the report (1) (2). Structure [F205] comprised a cluster of thirteen pits and postholes in an area of about 10m diameter. The pits were concentrated in the northern part. Four of these were excavated and all contained Middle Bronze Age pottery. Pit [702] excavated during the evaluation in Trench 7 was an ovoid pit 0.83 m by 0.65m across and 0.34m deep with steep sides and flat base, filled with two layers; a greyish-brown silty clay with charcoal staining in the lower part of the pit and a light brown silty clay above. A large group of Middle Bronze Age pottery sherds, including a large number of sherds from a single imported Trevisker style vessel from south-west England, were recovered from the fills of this pit. A flint/quartz pebble rubber was also recovered from the base of the pit. These finds may have been a deliberately placed deposit. Significant quantities of charcoal and charred grain were also recovered from the lower fill. Large quantities of charred grain and chaff (barley and emmer or spelt wheat) were recovered from pit [126]. A whetstone was recovered from pit [148] The scatter of postholes to the south probably represent the remains of a small structure, but the precise form and function has not been determined. Structure [F205] lay in the northwest corner of the Middle Bronze Age enclosure [F204] and appears to be contemporary with it.
