Summary

A hearth was found just to the east of the Middle Bronze Age enclosure [F204] during the 2005 excavation by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development as part of Phase II of the Poundbury development. It was an ovoid pit about 1.8m long which contained substantial amounts of charcoal including roundwood twig and branch material, and is thought to represent the remains of domestic fuel. This feature is undated, but its location next to the Middle Bronze Age enclosure perhaps suggests it is of a similar date.

Full Description

A hearth was found just to the east of the Middle Bronze Age enclosure [F204] during the 2005 excavation by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development as part of Phase II of the Poundbury development (1). The numbers in square brackets are context numbers used in the report (1). Hearth [163] lay about five metres east of the southeast corner of the enclosure. It was an ovoid pit about 1.8m long which contained substantial amounts of charcoal including roundwood twig and branch material, and is thought to represent the remains of domestic fuel. This feature is undated, but its location next to the Middle Bronze Age enclosure perhaps suggests it is of a similar date.
