Summary

A post-medieval well was found during a watching brief carried out by Terrain Archaeology in 2000 during the replacement of a retaining wall. The well was partially exposed in the northeast part of the site. It had a circular shaft cut into the chalk bedrock and had a dry stone lining to the upper part. The upper two metres of this well was void and it had been capped with concrete. The precise date of this well is not known but it is likely that it was capped in the late 19th or 20th century.

Full Description

A post-medieval well was found during a watching brief carried out by Terrain Archaeology in 2000 during the replacement of a retaining wall (1) (2). The numbers in square brackets are context numbers used in the report and archive (1). The well [123] was partially exposed in the northeast part of the site. It had a circular shaft cut into the chalk bedrock and had a dry stone lining to the upper part. The upper two metres of this well was void and it had been capped with concrete. The precise date of this well is not known but it is likely that it was capped in the late 19th or 20th century.
