Full Description
A post-medieval out house or stone-lined cess pit was found during a watching brief carried out by Terrain Archaeology in 2000 during the replacement of a retaining wall (1) (2). The numbers in square brackets are context numbers used in the report and archive (1).
The remains of a square or rectangular mortared stone structure [110] was partially exposed in the southeast corner of the site. It appeared to be part of a stone lining to a vertical shaft cut into the natural chalk. The cut was not bottomed and the upper part was rilled with loose mixed dark soil, ash, and rubble. Quantities of roofing slate and clay tobacco pipe were noted in these layers.
It may be the remains of a stone-lined cess pit or a latrine.
