Full Description

A small area of a flint cobbled surface was found in the southeast part of the site of the former Lott and Walne Foundry, Fordington High Street, Dorchester during the evaluation by AC archaeology in 1997 (1) (2). This surface comprised a compacted area of flint nodules, which was only found in the northern side of Test Pit 7. It lay on top of a layer of mid to dark grey silty clay and was sealed by a layer of mid to dark grey silty clay with chalk and limestone fragments and charcoal and mortar flecks. Two sherds of Roman coarsewares were recovered from this layer. The cobbled surface lay about 1.15m below ground level. This cobbling was not dated, but was sealed by layers which only contained Roman material, so it is possible that it is Roman in date, though a medieval or even post-medieval date is possible. No trace of this cobbled surface was found during the subsequent watching brief on the site (3).
