Summary

Parts of a large stone slab surface were found during the evaluation of the site of the former Lott and Walne Foundry, Fordington High Street, Dorchester by AC archaeology in 1997. This surface was found at a depth of 0.9m below ground level and was sealed by deposits containing medieval and post-medieval pottery. It is unclear what this surface is related to, or whether it was an internal or external feature.

Full Description

Parts of a large stone slab surface were found during the evaluation of the site of the former Lott and Walne Foundry, Fordington High Street, Dorchester by AC archaeology in 1997 (1) (2). This surface was found at a depth of 0.9m below ground level in Trial Pits 5 and 6 in the northwest part of the site. This surface overlay a dark grey clayey silt layer containing medieval pottery. It was sealed by deposits containing medieval and post-medieval pottery. It is unclear what this surface was related to, or whether it was an internal or external feature. No trace of it was recorded during the watching brief on the site (3).
