Monument record MDO18359 - South Walks Tunnel Sewer; Roman road
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A sewer pipe dug along Charles Street from South Walks in 1990 cut across part of a Roman road oriented NE-SW, which was recorded by Wessex Archaeology. This road is undoubtedly the same one revealed during excavations in Charles Street Car Park in 1989 and in Wollaston Field in 1947-52 and 1979. There is some suggestion that this part of the road went out of use in the 4th century as it was sealed by a dump of material dated to the 4th century AD, which covered the road and the tail of the Roman town rampart.

Full Description
A sewer pipe dug along Charles Street from South Walks in 1990 cut across part of a Roman road oriented NE-SW, which was recorded by Wessex Archaeology. The road was 5.75m wide and comprised a crushed chalk consolidation level with bands of compacted gravel over, up to a thickness of 0.5m. This road is undoubtedly the same one revealed during excavations in Charles Street Car Park in 1989 and in Wollaston Field in 1947-52 and 1979. There is some suggestion that this part of the road went out of use in the 4th century as it was sealed by a dump of material dated to the 4th century AD, which covered the road and the tail of the rampart of the town defences.
