Full Description
Two Roman pits and one probable well were found during the construction of a sewer along Charles Street from South Walks, Dorchester in 1990. The two pits were probably oval or circular in shape and were only partially within the trench. They had steep, near vertical sides and were not bottomed. They cut through a thin, probably early Roman soil level, but were not closely dated. One of these pits produced the lower stone of a Greensand rotary quern.
A possible Roman well was found cutting through the possible flint wall footing of the early unfinished Roman town wall. It was circular in plan and was over 6m deep.
