Summary

Late Iron Age Structure IA9 was one of a number of Iron Age round houses found on the slopes to the east of Poundbury Camp during excavations at Poundbury. It comprised two fragmentary ring slots forming a structure about 5m in diameter, of at least two phases of construction and repair. No trace of internal structures or floor surfaces survived. Immediately to the south of round house IA9 was a pit containing Durotrigian pottery and another pit lay to the northwest. Round house IA9, together with round house IA2 to the south and three associated pits formed the second phase of unenclosed settlement on this part of the site.

Full Description

Found during the excavations directed by Christopher Sparey Green, for the Dorchester Excavation Committee, between 1966 and 1979 during development of the Grove Trading Estate on the eastern slopes of Poundbury Camp, Dorchester (1). The numbers in square brackets below refer to the context and feature numbers used in the published report and archive (1) (2). The Late Iron Age round house, Structure IA9, was excavated in the northern end of the site on site E, on the slopes to the east of Poundbury camp. Round house IA9 was in a very fragmentary state and only survived as two short lengths of a former ring slot, apparently representing two different phases of construction of this house. It had an approximate diameter of about 5m in diameter. No trace of internal structures or occupation levels survived within this house. Round House IA9 was cut by the later round house IA5. Two pits appear to have been associated with this house: immediately adjacent to the south was pit [E922] and pit [E677] lay to the northwest. [E677] was of cylinder or beehive shape and was 0.6m deep and contained some Durotrigian pottery. Round house IA9, together with round house IA2 to the south, and associated pits [E677], [E960] & [E922] formed the second phase of unenclosed settlement on this part of the site.
