Monument record MDO18425 - Poundbury Middle Bronze Age Structure BA3

Structure BA3 was found on Poundbury Site C during the excavations directed by Christopher Sparey Green, for the Dorchester Excavation Committee, between 1966 and 1980, during development of the Grove Trading Estate on the eastern slopes of Poundbury Camp, Dorchester. Structure BA3 appeared to be a rectangular post-built structure lying immediately east of Middle Bronze Age Structure BA2, but it was heavily disturbed by subsequent activity. Immediately south and east was a trampled layer of small flints, including some occupation debris. This structure has been assigned to the Middle Bronze Age on the basis of its location adjacent to the similar Middle Bronze Age Structure BA1/BA2. It overlies the southern part of Early Bronze Age Structure BA4.

The numbers in square brackets below refer to the context and feature numbers used in the published report (1). Structure BA3 appeared to be a rectangular post-built structure lying immediately east of Middle Bronze Age Structure BA2. The details of the layout of BA3 are uncertain as it has been heavily disturbed by subsequent activity. It appears to consist of two irregular post rows set 2.75m apart forming the east and west sides of a rectangular structure 2.75m by 3.6m across. Immediately south and east of the post holes was a trampled layer of small flints, including some occupation debris (2). This structure has been assigned to the Middle Bronze Age on the basis of its location adjacent to the similar Middle Bronze Age Structure BA1/BA2. It overlies the southern part of Early Bronze Age Structure BA4.
