Full Description
Found in the southwestern part of Trench 2 during excavation at Middle Farm undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1992 (1) (2). Round house 1613 comprised a post ring of seven posts forming an approximate circle 6.2-6.8m in diameter. Four postholes were excavated and these were all severely truncated. There was no indication of a porch or of an entrance. Three other postholes were excavated, one inside the ring and two immediately outside. A line of three postholes was also recorded just NE. No floor levels survived. Very few finds were recovered, a very small quantity of Early-Middle Bronze Age pottery and flint. It is likely that the pottery was residual in the postholes and that the structure is of Late Bronze Age date.
This round house was one of a pair, with round house 1622 immediately to the south. A number of Late Bronze Age pits were found in the immediate vicinity, including one within the post ring of round house 1613.
