Full Description

Found during the excavations at the Integrated Photomatrix Ltd site on the eastern side of Poundbury Camp during development in 1980 (1). The numbers in square brackets below refer to the context and feature numbers used in the published excavation report and archive (1)(2). Further refinement of the post-Roman settlement sequence has been undertaken by Christopher Sparey Green since the initial publication of the site and this has been taken into account in the following description (3)(4). Post-Roman Grain drier 6 was found cut into the Roman aqueduct at the point where it crossed the site of the outer rampart of Poundbury hillfort. Although partly destroyed, its size and shape was similar the five post-Roman grain driers found during the main 1966-1979 excavations at Poundbury. It comprised the north end of a sub-rectangular pit 0.9m wide and at least 1.5m long and 0.6m deep. At the base of the feature was a thin layer of soot, ash and charred grain, which chalky soil above. No features were noted in the remaining undisturbed ground to the north and north east. Samples of the contents of this drier were taken but had not been examined at the time of publication (1). The post-Roman corn driers on the main Poundbury excavation site were all assigned to phase 1 of the post-Roman settlement (3). Not enough is known of the associations of grain drier 6 to be able to assign it to a particular phase of the post-Roman activity.
