Summary
Oven 8 was one of eight ovens found during the excavations on the site of the new Dorset County Library, Colliton Park, Dorchester in 1961-63. It lay within the area of Building 3 and the firing floor was cut by the north wall of Building 5. Only the lowest part of this oven survived. It was constructed from mortared limestone. This oven may have never been fired as, unlike the other ovens, there was no ash or burnt deposits and the edges of the firing floor were vertical and straight. This oven was possibly sealed beneath the floor of Building 3.

Full Description
Oven 8 was one of eight ovens found during the excavations on the site of the new Dorset County Library, Colliton Park, Dorchester in 1961-63 (1) (2). It lay within the area of Building 3 and the firing floor was cut by the north wall of Building 5. Only the lowest part of this oven survived. It was constructed from mortared limestone. This oven may have never been fired as, unlike the other ovens, there was no ash or burnt deposits and the edges of the firing floor were vertical and straight. This oven was possibly sealed beneath the floor of Building 3, so probably pre-dates the 3rd century AD.
