Monument record MDO18750 - 3 Fordington Green, Dorchester; Medieval Ditch

An archaeological evaluation for a proposed residential development at the rear of 3 Fordington Green, Dorchester, Dorset, was carried out by AC Archaeology during March 2006. The evaluation consisted of two trenches; 7m and 3m in length and 1m wide. The trenches were located in the lawn. Both trenches revealed a deep soil overburden above natural chalk. Trench 1 contained a single chalk-cut feature, a ditch or gully, containing medieval pottery.

Trench 1 contained a single chalk-cut feature, a ditch or gully, containing medieval pottery. It was aligned approximately NE-SW at the southern end of the trench. It was approximately 0.6m wide and 0.56m deep with steep sloping sides and a flat base. It was filled with a mid gre-brown silty clay with much pea grit and shattered chalk fragments. The pottery was late medieval in date (13th-15th century).
