Full Description
In 1979 a gas main trench was dug along Church Street where "a fragment of the east-west road previously recorded outside the Methodist Church in South Street was encountered (SY 69379066)." (1)
The road was constructed directly on top of the old ground surface and comprised a thin layer of rammed chalk beneath a layer of grey loam and flints with some limestone rubble, which was sealed by another layer of rammed chalk and topped by a layer of yellowish-grey sand and gravel metalling.
