Full Description
(SY69259082) An apsidal wall, 60m inside the mediaeval castle ditch, was found during building work at the rear of 6 North Square in 1977. Of coursed limestone, it had flint footings incorporating broken Roman roofing tiles, and cut through earlier Roman floor levels. It ws at right angles to an earlier wall contemprary with the floor levels. Late 2nd century pottery was found in the apsidal wall construction trench. A possible ditch running N-S and conforming the Roman street plan was also noted; it was cut by a pit of late C2nd date. Part of a late C1st E-W ditch was located behind 21 North square (SY69309080). It also conformed to the street grid.<1>
