Monument record MDO18963 - Poundbury Late Iron Age Infant burial E1392

An infant burial was found on Site C during the excavations at Poundbury, Dorchester, undertaken by Christopher Sparey Green between 1966-1979. The crouched burial of an infant aged 6 months was found in a small irregular grave beneath the floor of Late Iron Age house IA10, within the Late Iron Age unenclosed settlement on the slopes to the east of Poundbury Camp. It was aligned N-S, lying on its right side with the head to the north. No grave goods were found. It was the earliest grave in the Late Iron Age/Early Roman cemetery in this area. It is unclear whether this burial was directly associated with house IA10 or not.

Found during the excavations directed by Christopher Sparey Green, for the Dorchester Excavation Committee, between 1966 and 1979 during development of the Grove Trading Estate on the eastern slopes of Poundbury Camp, Dorchester (1) (2). The numbers in square brackets below refer to the context and feature numbers used in the published report and archive (1) (2) (3). An infant aged 6 months was buried in a small irregular grave beneath the floor of Late Iron Age house IA10. It was aligned N-S and was in a crouched position lying on its right side with the head to the north. No grave goods were found. It was the earliest grave in the Late Iron Age/Early Roman cemetery in this area. It is unclear whether this burial was directly associated with house IA10 or not.
