Summary

A Roman intaglio, set in a ring, possibly representing Cupid walking right and burning the butterfly Psyche with his torch. It can be dated to the 3rd or fourth centuries AD. It was found at Colliton Park, Dorchester, on the 23rd May, 1938.

Full Description

A Roman intaglio, set in a ring, possibly representing Cupid walking right and burning the butterfly Psyche with his torch. But if this is so the god's figure is reduced to the barest essentials. It is in blue glass, with dimensions of 12mm x 10mm. The paste is broken in the top left hand corner. It can be dated to the 3rd or fourth centuries AD. It was found at Colliton Park, Dorchester, on the 23rd May, 1938. Dorset County Museum accession number 3320.
