Full Description

Two Romano-British bronze objects were found in 1943 by Mr. B. Ellis in a wartime trench in the Army Camp on the east side of Poundbury Camp, between the railway line and the river. They comprise a small bronze hanging bowl with hemispherical body in hammered bronze, with hollow bead rim and two ring handles attatched by riveted loops; and a model axe head just 1.1 inches long with flat hammer butt. They were projecting from the side of the war time trench at a depth of about 18 inches. They are most likely to derive from the Roman cemetery there.(1) However, subsequent excavations at the copse in 1966 were thought to encompass the exact location of this discovery. The suggestion was that a back-filled wartime trench had evidence for an exploratory excavation in the side, which was interpreted as the discovery spot of the two objects. If this was the case then the objects derived from a foundation trench and may represent foundation deposits.(2)
