Summary

A former Chapel in Durngate Street has been identified as probably the former Wesleyan Chapel opened on 22 December 1840. The chapel was incorporated into a warehouse and later became part of a printing works. This building has been substantially altered or rebuilt, the south frontage is modern, but the north wall is of limestone rubble construction and is probably part of the chapel/warehouse.

Full Description

A former Chapel in Durngate Street has been identified as probably the former Wesleyan Chapel opened on 22 December 1840. It was a plain building of brick rendered in stucco. The south end was gabled, with a central doorway and three windows with square heads. The chapel was incorporated into a warehouse and later became part of a printing works. Nothing remained of the interior of the chapel when looked at for the Royal Commission inventory (1). The building is marked as 'Alington Hall' on the 1888 Ordnance Survey map (2). (SY 69329067). Former chapel in Durngate Street of brick rendered in stucco, is probably the Wesleyan Chapel opened 1840. It now forms part of a printing works and the interior has been gutted. <3> This building has been substantially altered or rebuilt, the south frontage is modern, but the north wall is of limestone rubble construction and is probably part of the chapel/warehouse. <4>
