Summary

A watching brief at Christchurch Castle new bowls pavilion, during 1987, revealed evidence for the possible castle ditch. The recorded layers were often shelving at low angles. It is not possible to interpret the observations in detail, but they may relate to the castle ditch. finds were very sparse and limited to two sherds of 13th-14th century cooking pots. A ditched and banked boundary earthwork is visible at this location on 1940s aerial photographs and was mapped by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

K. Jarvis conducted a watching brief at Christchurch Castle, Christchurch, during topsoil stripping in 1987 in advance of construction of a new bowls pavilion. The results were subsequently published as a short note in PDNHAS volume 107 (1). Observation of an 18m x 11m area of topsoil stripping revealed evidence for the possible castle ditch. The recorded layers were often shelving at low angles. It is not possible to interpret the observations in detail, but they may relate to the castle ditch. finds were very sparse and limited to two sherds of 13th-14th century cooking pots. A ditched and banked boundary earthwork is visible at this location on 1940s aerial photographs and was mapped by the Dorset Stour NMP project (2).
