Summary

Excavation at Wick Lane, , Christchurch, during 1983 (site W43), revealed a feature measuring 2m N-S and 1m E-W extended from the section. It was cut 0.6m into the gravel and had undercut edges and was located adjacent to medieval ditch A. The fill suggests a dumping followed by a deliberate capping of gravel. The ditch may post-date the pit but the pottery suggests that the interval is small.

Full Description

Wessex Archaeological Committee conducted an excavation at Wick Lane, Christchurch, during 1983 (site W43) in advance of the construction of an access road from Wick Lane to the rear of High Street. The results were subsequently published in PDNHAS volume 105 (1). The excavation revealed a feature measuring 2m N-S and 1m E-W extended from the section. It was cut 0.6m into the gravel and had undercut edges and was located adjacent to medieval ditch A. The basal fill up to 0.40m thick, dipped from N-S and was composed of a black silty sand. This was overlain by gravel, domed in the centre to a thickness of 0.2m. The fills above this graded into the upper sand fills of the section. These fills do not appear to represent natural silting and suggest a dumping followed by a deliberate capping of gravel. No clear relationship can be demonstrated between ditch A and pit [19]. The ditch (filled up by the 12th-13th century) may post-date the pit but the pottery suggests that the interval is small.
