Monument record MDO19320 - Rear of Old Town Hall, Christchurch (site W8); medieval hollow

Excavation at the rear of the old Town Hall, High Street, Christchurch, during 1981 (site W8), revealed a broad shallow hollow in the SE corner of the site. It had a shallow sloping north edge which was sealed by late medieval and post medieval layers and truncated 11th-12th century pits [365 & 398]. It also appears to truncate 12th-13th century gully [37]. It has a sandy loam fill and may be some kind of track way.

Wessex Archaeological Committee conducted an excavation at the rear of the old Town Hall, High Street Christchurch, during 1981(site W8). The results were subsequently published in PDNHAS volume 105 (1). The excavation revealed a broad shallow hollow in the SE corner of the site. It had a shallow sloping north edge which was sealed by late medieval and post medieval layers and truncated 11th-12th century pits [365 & 398]. It also appears to truncate 12th-13th century gully [37]. The fill is a sandy loam natural accumulation and it is possible that it may be some kind of track way, although other suggestions may be equally valid.
