Summary

Excavation at the rear of the old Town Hall, High Street, Christchurch, during 1981 (site W8), revealed a pit complex in the SE corner of the site. This comprised at least two pits [365 & 398] of irregular shape and both cut into the natural gravel to a depth of c. 0.8m. the few finds from their fills suggested a date in the 11th-12th centuries. Their function is uncertain, although they do not seem to have been gravel extraction pits.

Full Description

Wessex Archaeological Committee conducted an excavation at the rear of the old Town Hall, High Street Christchurch, during 1981(site W8). The results were subsequently published in PDNHAS volume 105 (1). The excavation revealed a pit complex in the SE corner of the site. This comprised at least two pits [365 & 398] of irregular shape and both cut into the natural gravel to a depth of c. 0.8m. the few finds from their fills suggested a date in the 11th-12th centuries. In addition some late Neolithic flakes and a scraper were found. Their function is uncertain, although they do not seem to have been gravel extraction pits.
