Summary
Excavation at the rear of the old Town Hall, High Street, Christchurch, during 1981 (site W8), revealed a pit complex in the SE corner of the site. This comprised at least two pits [365 & 398] of irregular shape and both cut into the natural gravel to a depth of c. 0.8m. the few finds from their fills suggested a date in the 11th-12th centuries. Their function is uncertain, although they do not seem to have been gravel extraction pits.
