Full Description
K. Jarvis directed excavations in the tenement strip at the rear of the High Street frontage, Staggs site (X12) Christchurch, during 1976. The results were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (1).
The excavations revealed evidence for a timber structure [S3]. This was a rectangular structure 7.4m long and 2.0m wide of post construction probably formed by 18 post holes averaging 0.2m deep, the corner posts being [377, 355, 379, 368]. Six sherds from three post holes suggest a 14th-15th century date.
The plan is partly symmetrical and suggests a small structure. It is possible to speculate that the post holes form a part, possibly the cross passage, of a larger structure but there is insufficient evidence for further comment.
The central area of the site formed a separate plot in the medieval period for which the structures [S2-3] were the main features.
