Summary

A watching brief on the site of the Dolphin development, Church Street, Christchurch, during 1974-5, revealed three 15th-16th century stone features in the eastern corner of the site. Stone-lined drain [F26] was sealed by a 16th century layer and was apparently associated with rectangular stone structure [F24] interpreted as either a large stone-lined pit or a small stone building. [F27] was a 15th-16th century stone wall of uncertain function located approximately 10m to the north, close to and aligned perpendicular to Church Street.

Full Description

M. Fox for Poole Museums, directed a program of rescue excavation and observation in advance of the Dolphin development, Church Street, Christchurch, during 1974-5 (site X11.2). The results were subsequently published in DNHAS monograph 5 (1). The observations revealed three 15th-16th century stone features in the eastern corner of the site. Stone-lined drain [F26] was sealed by a 16th century layer and was apparently associated with rectangular stone structure [F24] interpreted as either a large stone-lined pit or a small stone building. [F27] was a 15th-16th century stone wall of uncertain function located approximately 10m to the north, close to and aligned perpendicular to Church Street.
