Monument record MDO19389 - Dolphin Development, Church Street, Christchurch (site X11.1); 17th-18th century activity

A trial excavation in the garden behind the Dolphin Hotel, Church Street, Christchurch, during 1974, revealed evidence for post medieval activity. This included a partially robbed 17th-18th century brick wall, adjacent to this was a similar brick wall and a patch of clay sealed by an 18th-19th century pit. Several pits, a shallow gully and two stake-holes were also recorded.

M. Fox for Poole Museums, directed the excavation of a trial trench in the rear garden of the Dolphin Hotel, Church Street, Christchurch, during development of the area in 1974. The excavation was subsequently published in DNHAS monograph 5 (1). The excavations revealed evidence for post medieval activity. This included a partially robbed 17th-18th century brick wall [F18] of unfrogged bricks (228x110x55mm), cut through a late 16th century clay layer [F5]. Adjacent to this was a similar brick wall [F21] and another patch of clay [F16] sealed by an 18th-19th century pit [F4]. These clay layers may be interpreted as either building debris or floor levels of early post-medieval structures. Several pits [F2-4, 7, 10], an undated shallow gully and two stake-holes [F17 & 19] were also recorded.
