Monument record MDO19414 - Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester; Early Roman timber building G575
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
This early Roman timber structure was found during excavations by Wessex Archaeology in advance of the redevelopment of the former Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester in 2000-2001.
Building G575 was a rectilinear post-built structure found in the southern end of Block 1&3. It was constructed on a terrace built up over a small coombe. The full plan of this structure was not revealed in the excavated area. Two ovens were found within the area of this building, but it is not clear how they are related. The ovens are well-made stone-built ovens constructed immediately adjacent, with their firing floors to the south. They are of differing design and were not constructed at the same time. The backfill material within these ovens included a large quantity of herring bones suggesting it was debris from the preparation of a fish sauce. Building G575 and the ovens have been tentatively dated to the late 1st-2nd century AD.
