Summary

Site of quarries. Extensive area quarried around masonry works and to the south east, on maps of 1900 and 1927. Some further quarrying in south by 1959. Disturbed ground is now mostly an area for stockpiling quarried and dressed stones (ready for despatch). Part is now fields, rough grazing, where hummocky surface indicates past quarrying.

Full Description

Site of quarries. Extensive area quarried around masonry works and to the south east, on maps of 1900 and 1927. (1-2) Some further quarrying in south by 1959. (3) Disturbed ground is now mostly an area for stockpiling quarried and dressed stones (ready for despatch). Part is now fields, rough grazing, where hummocky surface indicates past quarrying. (4) The early- to mid-20th century Bottom Coombe Limestone quarry, described above in (1-4), is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s. The quarry was plotted to its extent seen in this period and is visible over an area measuring approximately 365 m by 145 m. (5) The quarry is shown as being partially filled in on aerial imagery of 2009. (6) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
