Full Description

A rectangular earthwork enclosure defined by a bank and external ditch was recorded in Crates Meadow, Piddletrenthide, at the head of a shallow combe. There was an original entrance on the east side, about 3.6 m wide, with a later gap in the bank to the west. Within the enclosure, on the south side was a scarped and embanked platform, probably the site of a building. In the northern half of the enclosure were two other slight platforms and a circular hollow about 0.6 m deep. Outside the enclosure to the east were two circular hollows, possibly ponds. <1> This enclosure was surveyed in the early 20th century by H S Toms, who considered the enclosure was later in date than a 'cultivation scarp' (probably part of an ancient field system in the surrounding area.) <2> ST 72250097 The enclosure has been completely ploughed out. The site of the earthwork was under stubble when perambulated, and no finds were made. Soil mark of enclosure visible on OS air photographs <3.1-3.2>. <3>
