Monument record MDO19685 - Wide Street Quarries shelter, Portland
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Remains of east-facing quarrymen's shelter, discovered during recent quarrying operations in late summer 2007. Front lintel has fallen from support on south side. Inside, an upright slab at the back has '1891' carved crudely. Smaller stones are mortared to continue a wall above the slab, while there is a narrow passage to the left or south. Grid reference is approximate, but it is notably close to the position of a ‘disused subway’ on the 1959 map from Tout Quarries beneath Wide Street.
