Monument record MDO19693 - South of Tinney's Lane, Sherborne; early prehistoric linear [45]

Summary
Excavations by Wessex Archaeology at the south side of Tinney’s Lane during 1997 revealed evidence for a linear feature extending for 12m in an E-W direction at the south end of the site. The only dating evidence was two residual early Bronze Age sherds and it may be of early prehistoric date.

Full Description
Found during excavations conducted by Wessex Archaeology during January 1997 in advance of a housing development (Knotts Paddock) south of Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne. The results of the excavation have been published in PDNHAS, 121, 53-69 (1). Numbers in square brackets below refer to context numbers given in this report.
Evidence for prehistoric activity was limited to 8 sherds of residual Early Bronze Age pottery from two features [45] & [92]. The latter was a post-medieval post-hole but linear feature [45], at the south end of he site, contained no other dating evidence and may be of early prehistoric date. It measured 0.73m wide and 0.35m deep with steep sides and a flat base. It extended for 12m from a blunt ended terminal at its western end. It had a single fill of coarse limestone rubble containing fragments of animal bone.
