Full Description
Found during excavations conducted by Wessex Archaeology during January 1997 in advance of a housing development (Knotts Paddock) south of Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne. The results of the excavation have been published in PDNHAS, 121, 53-69 (1). Numbers in square brackets below refer to context numbers given in this report.
A slightly curved linear feature [113] was excavated in the vicinity of a group of late Iron Age flexed inhumations in the south of the site. The dating of the feature is ambiguous, although it may be broadly contemporary with the inhumations. Nevertheless, it clearly post dates grave [17], apparently cutting its fill. [113] was a maximum of 0.48m deep with a steep concave west side with the east side being convex for the lower portion and almost vertical above. The lower fill contained animal bone and worked flint. A possibly intrusive iron fragment was recovered from the upper fill. The northern end of the feature was poorly defined.
