Full Description
Temporary railway used in excavation of the Verne Citadel ditch, which also provided stone for the breakwater and other government works. Course survives alongside east cliff. The 1863 map shows the line starting at the top of the Admiralty/Breakwater Incline, passing along just below the top of the east cliff, then around the north side of the Verne, ending in two sidings at the north west corner. (1) Published photographs show a more temporary tramway in the Verne ditch during the construction of the South Gate in 1865 and was still there in 1877. (2)
