Full Description

Several small blocks of fragmentary and disturbed 'Celtic' fields, once probably continuous, occur in NW Piddletrenthide and SW Alton Pancras. At Kiddle's Bottom, around ST 687005, traces exist over 4 acres. At Higher Down, around ST 684013, on both sides and the bottom of a re-entrant south of the spur, an area of 25 acres has well-marked though partly spread parallel lynchets, 28 to 40 yards apart, generally under 1 foot high but exceptionally up to 4 feet. North of the spur are very faint traces of cross-valley scarps, one contour scarp on the north slope being 10 feet high. At Lower Down, from ST 691011 to ST 699010, about 33 acres show remains of very fragmentary 'Celtic' fields. An enclosed area at ST 697011, about 170 yds by 130 yds, has at least 6 parallel strips up to 160 yds long, presumably ditches or furrows, visible on aerial photographs. <1> An isolated and disturbed section of double-lynchet track with scarps 4ft high above and below and a hollowed tread 4 yds wide runs SW from ST 69850098 for 200 ft and then NW for 180 feet. At Tenant's Bottom, ST 692014 to ST 698017, very fragmentary remains are just visible on both sides of the valley. An extensive field system, centred at ST 690015, of Iron Age/Romano-British type, consisting of scattered and fragmentary banks and lynchets. <2>
