The position of Highcliffe House and outbuildings, the 18th century precursor to Highcliffe Castle, is marked on an estate map dated 1796. Their position is such that the remains are likely to have destroyed by cliff subsidence, although foundations of some of the outbuildings may survive between modern housing.

Their position is such that the remains are likely to have destroyed by cliff subsidence, although foundations of some of the outbuildings, which were retained as outbuildings for the 19th century Highcliffe Castle may survive amongst the houses 'Cliff Cottage', 'Dalkeith' and 'Cliff House'. 'the third Earl of Bute... had built a house here from the design of the brothers Adam, which was rendered uninhabitable and ultimately destroyed by the fall of the cliff; the lodge gates are those of the first house…' (2)
