Summary

A number of late 18th/19th century pits were found during a watching brief to the rear of 41and 43 East Street, Bridport, undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 1999. These pits, unlike earlier rubbish and cess pits, did not respect the line of the medieval town ditch, suggesting it was no longer a boundary feature by this date.

Full Description

A number of late 18th/19th century pits were found during a watching brief to the rear of 41and 43 East Street, Bridport, undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 1999. These pits, unlike earlier rubbish and cess pits, did not respect the line of the medieval town ditch, suggesting it was no longer a boundary feature by this date. (1) (2) (3) A single elongated rectangular pit filled with a large quantity of building rubble (including Ham Hill stone, flint, limestone , brick and tile) and some 18th/19th century pottery and glass was found dug through the fills of the medieval town ditch in the property to the rear of 41 East Street. (1) (2) Four pits were found to the rear of 43 East Street, two of which cut through the fills of the medieval town ditch and two further to the south. These pits also contained large quantities of building rubble, together with some 18th/19th century pottery. (1) (3)
