Monument record MDO19928 - 29 South Street, Bridport: post-medieval activity

Two stone-lined post-medieval wells, two subrectangular 18th/19th century pits containing organic material and a number of modern features were exposed during the evaluation of the site of the former Co-op supermarket, 29 South Street, Bridport, undertaken by CKC Archaeology in 2001.

Two post-medieval wells, two 18th/19th century pits and a number of modern features were exposed during the evaluation of the site of the former Co-op supermarket, 29 South Street, Bridport, undertaken by CKC Archaeology in 2001 (1). Two stone-lined wells were observed outside of the area of the evaluation trenches. One lay in the southwest corner of the site in the corner of South Street and Folly Mill Lane, the other lay immediately west of Trench 6 to the south of the Town Museum building in the northwest part of the site. Two subrectangular pits were found in Trench 9 behind the South Street frontage, close to Folly Mill Lane. One pit was stone-lined and filled with dark organic silty clay containing pottery of 18th century date and the other had a large amount of organic material including pieces of wood, but no dating evidence, but probably was of 18th or 19th century date.
