Full Description

(SY 605865) Field system. <1> A grass-covered area with irregular enclosures formed by field banks and lynchets of Iron Age/Romano British type, from 0.5m to 1.5m high. In the southern part of the area they are overlain by lynchets of Medieval type. <2> The Hell Stone long barrow (SY 68 NW 12) has been used as a 'Celtic' field boundary, and south of it strip lynchets run into 'Celtic' fields. <3> Centred SY 605865, a Celtic field system overlain in part by Medieval strip lynchets, as described by Auths 2 and 3. Area delineated on 1:10 000 Record Sheet. <4> A grass-covered area with irregular enclosures formed by field banks and lynchets of Iron Age/Romano British type, from 0.5m to 1.5m high. In the southern part of the area they are overlain by lynchets of medieval type. Also visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs <5-8>. These were digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
