Full Description

A tramway was constructed from the cliffs behind Monmouth Beach to the Cobb in 1853, in order to transport the quarried blue lias stone to the quay. It was built for Hutchinson and Frean of Plymouth who were quarrying the cliffs at this date. The wagons rolled down a slight incline to the Cobb, where they were then drawn by horses on to the Cobb itself. A branch line was laid to the cement factory after it was constructed in c. 1865. (1) The tramway appears to have become disused by about the turn of the 20th century.
