Summary

A former corn mill, now converted to housing. The mill buildings are of stone rubble construction. The mill pond lay to the northeast and has been infilled. Documentary evidence suggests there was a mill here in the medieval period.

Full Description

Beaminster Mill (Corn), together with the mill pond to the north, is marked on the First and Second Editions of the Ordnance Survey 25-inch maps. <1> The site may be that of a medieval mill. In 1525 Philip Spelt held for life a water mill called Beaminster Mill, which was probably on or near this site. <2> The surviving mill buildings are of rubble stone and comprise an orginal two bay structure with a two-bay extension both of two storeys plus attics. There is a stepped stone spillway to the north with a mid 19th century rack and pinion sluice. There is a headrace in a brick-arched culvert beneath the site of the former pond. <3> The pond has been backfilled and the mill buildings have been heavily altered to form housing. The mill has been converted to housing and is heavily altered. It is approximately 2 storeys plus attic, and is of 2 bays and an extension 2 bays. Built of rubble stone, with a stepped stone spillway to the north with mid 19th century rack and pinion sluice. There is a headrace in brick-arched culvert beneath the site of the former pond. The association with the textlie industry is not certain.
