Full Description
A Tudor style villa dated early to mid 19th century, probably 1840-60, located on Gloucester Street and Turton Street, originally detached, but is now in a row. It was built from ashlar, brick and rubble and has a slate roof with a lofty chimney stack top the rear. It has a single storey front and a two storey rear. To Turton Street there are three windows and a doorway. The windows are large stone casements, the window to the left of the door is slightly brought forward and has a central splayed light to a central mullion. A segmental door is set in deep moulded reveals and a moulded label runs across the front below the parapet. A panel above the door reads ` TURTON VILLA 1771', however, this date does not correspond with the architectural detail of the building. The interior retains many original features, including a stone stairs to a cellar which traditionally is said to have been a secret passage to Gloucester Lodge. This is reputedly a lodge for KIng George III's mistress, if this is true the present building is a replacement for an earlier one. <1>
