Monument record MDO22789 - Medieval rubbish pit to rear of 8 West Street, Wareham

Please read our .

Summary

A pit observed in the course of archaeological observations and recording during digging of foundation trenches for a dwelling on land to the rear of a late sixteenth or early seventeenth-century house. The pit was approximately 1.5m wide and 1.2m deep, with steeply-sloping sides and a flat base. The filling of the pit was a grey/black soil with frequent charcoal pieces. Finds included limestone rubble, roof tile, fragments of brick, oyster shell, animal bone, one pottery sherd and one piece of struck flint. The pit is dated to the medieval period on the basis of the one pottery sherd, found on the bottom of the pit. However, other items in the filling suggest an episode of demolition, and the pit may be post-medieval in date.

Full Description

The pit was approximately 1.2m wide and 1m deep, with steeply-sloping sides and a flat base. The filling of the pit was a black humic soil with frequent charcoal pieces. Finds included limestone rubble, roof tile, fragments of brick, oyster shell, animal bone, one pottery sherd and one piece of struck flint. The pit is dated to the medieval period on the basis of the one pottery sherd, found on the bottom of the pit. However, it is possible that this find was re-deposited, particularly as other items in the filling suggest an episode of demolition, and the pit may be post-medieval in date. (1)
