Full Description
One of 6 barrows on top of Tulk's Hill. Bowl barrow, 45ft. in diam and 5ft. high, with traces of a ditch. <2>
Three grass covered bowl barrows with no trace of surrounding ditches. … 'B' - Diameter 15.0m, height 2.0m taken to the west. There is a slight central depression. <3>
'B' - A well formed bowl barrow, diameter 16 paces, height 5ft. <4>
A group of three Bronze Age bowl barrows on Tulk's Hill. The western barrow has a mound, 15 metres in diameter and 1.5 metres high, which has had a trench, 2 metres wide, excavated into it from the south, opening out into a central hollow, 4 metres in diameter and 0.7 metres deep. This is said to be the result from an unrecorded amateur excavation carried out before World War II. The cental barrow has a mound, 18 metres in diameter and 1.5 metres high, and the eastern barrow has a mound, 10 metres in diameter and 0.3 metres high. All are surrounded by quarry ditches from which material was excavated during their construction, now visible as slight depressions 3 metres wide. <7>
The feature is visible on aerial photographs <6> and was digitally plotted for the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
