Full Description

The churchyard cross was constructed in 1923 using a variety of old material. The steps are of red iron-stone from Crawford Abbey with seven large blocks of granite from Haywardy Bridge near Shillingstone, a bridge which was reconstructed circa 1900. The shaft was made from two old stone rollers. The ancient socket stone is of Ham Hill Stone and came from Spettisbury. It was given by Mr. C. Strange in 1923. <1> (ST 95050038) The various components of this cross are readily identifiable. It consists of a square shaft set into an ancient socket stone mounted on two composite steps. The socket stone is verymuch weathered with spurs at the lower corners, is approximately 1.1m square and 0.5m. High. Whether this stone was once part of Spettisbury Village or churchyard cross was not ascertained during field investigation. <2> The octagonal to square base of this cross is 14th century. <3>
