Full Description
The church originated in the 17th century as an independent congregation, of which George Thorne, ejected rector of Melcombe Regis, was regarded as the founder. Until 1864, meetings were held in Nicholas Street where, in 1703-5, three cottages were purchased and placed in trust for use as a meeting house. The Great Meeting House in Nicholas Street was built, but was replaced by an enlarged building on the same site in 1803-4. In 1864 the building was sold and it was converted to a music hall. It was replaced by the Gloucester Street chapel in 1864, which itself was demolished in 1980. <2>
