Monument record MDO2321 - Mound, Rampisham

One of two mounds situated about 9 yards apart. The mounds are irregular and next to each of them, on its eastern side, is a depression about 7 yards wide. In 1952 this mound was reported as being 53 yards by 19 yards and 5 feet high.

1. 350 yds S.S.E of YARD COTTAGE [on 21 SW] are two irregular oval mounds, about 9 yards apart. The most northerly is 35 yds x 19 yds x 4 1/2 ft. high, and the other is 53 yds x 19 yds x 5ft. high. The middle part of the latter has been cut into. Alongside each mound on the E. is a depression 7 yards wide. (1) ST 54760274 at A ; ST 54760269 at B. These mounds are as described and measured in T.1. They are aligned in a N-S. direction, and crossed in the same direction by a modern hedge. The major part of each mound falls on the W. side of the hedge. To the E are corresponding depressions, 7.0 m wide and 0.3 m to 0.5 m. deep, and rather rectangular. The origin and purpose of these mounds is obscure. The W. half of each is ploughed, and is composed of normal flint and gravel soil. These are not suggestive of barrows; it is just possible that they are curious natural features and the depressions on the E. gravel diggings. (2) Prob. spoil mounds of adjacent gravel digging which have been farmed over and now appear over prominent. (3) No change (4).
