Full Description

The estate of Morley was purchased in the reign of Henry VIII by the Constantine family, and sold in 1712. The old seat of the Constantines stands in the vale, about 1/2 mile away from the large mid-18th century house which replaced it. (See also SZ 09 NW 63) <1> This farmhouse, still called Merley Hall Farm, is supposed to date back to the 14th century, but the house has been completely altered. The house is an L- shaped building of two storeys with dormer windows, tiled roofs, and a brick wing of perhaps about 19th century date on the east side of the older house. Admittance to the house could not be obtained, but large heavy whitewashed ceiling beams were visible in the hall. Mrs. Hutchins could supply no authoritative information, but her mention of a 14th century origin, and the situation described in auth.2 suggests that this may be the site or the remains of the Constantine mansion. <3> Merley Hall Farm (Merly Hall Farm according to auth.<4>) is of two storeys, rendered with a tiled roof, built in the 17th century, but considerably altered and extended. No mention of an earlier building. <4> <5>
