Summary

Old Gravel Pit marked on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1885 & 1900, not shown on subsequent maps. The feature is visible as shallow earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

The gravel pit is visible as shallow earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs (2). The feature comprises an irregular shallow depression 127m long and up to 87m wide and bordered by roads on its south and west sides (2). The scarp edges are lined with low scrubby trees. The feature is recorded as 'Old clay pit' on the OS 1st Edition map (1). The site is under housing on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is no longer visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
